If you go to this link, part of the FIAT Group site, and then select the
Fiat Board of Directors - 14/05/99 - Press Release, you will get a long
review of the current conditions of the FIAT organization.  Highlights are
that the reintroduction of Alfa Romeo is the one big auto success -
including some car of the year awards.  There is a discussion of their
globalization strategy and while it is heavy on establishing manufacturing
and sales in developing countries, it does say that they won't ignore
opportunities in developed nations.  They also, in several parts of the
"group,"  own companies operating in the US and Canada.  But there is NO
hint that the new Alfa cars (and their interesting diesels) will be coming
to a showroom near me this year.  They are now selling small tractors in
North America and bought a company that makes dies for making car bodies and
things.
