Re: Milano: Power steering pump problem

As with the Bosch fuel pump feeding the L-Jetronic system, Alfa did
not build the power steering pump and I'm sure that it's present in
many makes/models. When I had my Milano, I noted that there are
similarities to many other import's pumps. There HAS to be an economic
alternative available for the unit...perhaps look to Volvos or the
dreaded German cars sold in higher volumes (with correspondingly lower
prices) for possible solutions. I'd suggest a walk through your local
'U-Pull-It' junk yard -- during such a trip, I was pleasantly
surprised at the number of compatible parts available on a Peugeot
(apparently not a popular car with parts pullers, as this car was
nearly intact.)

Another option -- the cheapest overall -- is to run the car past a
died-in-the-wool true American type shop with a request to think of
'what might fit.' I'd be willing to bet that some Ford pump (probably
a MazdaFord like the Probe/MX5 or Escort/323) would do the job
admirably with minimum modifications. Anyone who has access to amiable
domestic technicians might want to pose the question and perhaps save
many Alfa owners a substantial sum. (Sorry, AlfaBill...but this
benefits the authorized Alfa parts people in the long term. The more
Alfas on the road, the more Alfa-only parts you'll sell.)

Just a thought,
