ahhhhhh-bad output shaft

The spider is killing me! I guess while it was sitting this winter, the
transmission output shaft somehow got water on it and rusted, so the output
shaft has to be replaced ($675!!). While he's in there, I'm having the
mechanic who's doing it also replace the 2nd gear synchro. 
My question is, what do I need to do to prevent this happening again? The
car lives outside (covered), and during the winter is not driven in the
rain, although, like I said, it lives outside, so is exposed to moisture.
Would it help to park it on a sheet of plastic, or something?
