I had a similar problem with the transmission on my '77 spider twice. Once
it intermittently refused to engage 3rd & 4th, and it turned out the shift
forks were loose/broken. The other time it became very hard to shift was
when the layshaft bearings died (don't ask why, it's embarassing:-) ). 

<The odd thing is that it fixed itself for a while. Maybe it just wanted to
go home!>

Funny you should say that. Most times I've had trouble with my spider, it's
been in the driveway, or it's still managed to limp home.
