Simon asked why we don't just saw the rods in half.  I think the answer has
already been given- so that the 2 pieces fit together perfectly.  Better
than with any dowel type.  So the rods are machined to be perfectly round,
broken apart- and when they are bolted back together, you sitll have
a
"perfect" circle (within tolerances..).
