Trailing arm bushing removal (or arm replacement)

I'm in the middle of replacing my trailing arm bushings an T-arm bush at
the diff. to firm up my sloppy rear end feel. I took the arms down to a
local auto machine shop to press them out, but he ended up breaking the
brazed joint holding the shell in the trailing arm. So I'm now in need of a
replacement arm(s) and I still have to get the old bushings out. How do the
pros do it?
I figure I can get a used one from APE, but Tom Sahines wrote in the Cams a
while back about replacing trailing arms with older ones which had smaller
bushings. I presumed this was to stiffen things up a bit. The replacement
bushings I purchased are polyurethane, so this should have the same effect.
Of course, I can get heim-jointed units suitable for racing, but I've heard
there pretty noisy and mine is a street car. Advice on these or other options?
Thanks,
Mike Grace
