Re:Toe and tire ware

Chris and Graham,

Here is a synopsis of my 20 years of observing tire(tyre) ware and how it
is affected by alignment. Camber always wares tires positive the
outside, negative the inside but it tends to be slower then toe ware.
Excessive toe tends to ware the inside of the tire with slight feathering
on the inside. Excessive toe in doesn't seem to ware outer edge much. I
don't have an explanation, it just makes the car handle like a boat.
All of this is very chassis dependent some types are more prone then
others.

As for caster 105/115 chassis can have caster ware on the outer edge but
I have only seen it when the caster is less then 1 degree positive. It
also makes them understeer very badly.

As for what is usually, milano's and GTV-6's at stock ride height toe is
more common then camber problems. Spider's from the 80's seemed to come
from the factory with the caster set at 1/2 to 3/4 degrees, perhaps to
lighten the steering.

Hope this sheds some light on your questions.

Chris Hall
