Re: alfa-digest V7 #684

Ryan, I am not familiar with the exact antenna in the GTV6, but if it is
anything like the one in the 85 Spider Veloce, essentially it is a strip
of metal bonded to the inside of the glass which will eventually terminate
at a larger "footprint" (if you will), to which the shielded lead can be
connected. This type of antenna is prone to oxidation and inadvertent
trauma, such as when you clean the windshield. Windshield solvents will
also accelerate deterioration of the antenna.

How to fix:
1. first, make sure that your cable is not the culprit (75 or 300 Ohm?)
2. check the interface between cable and windshield. Maybe some
good-intentioned soul superglued it to the windshield when it first came
off. Scrape off and solder for a proper connection.
3. breaks in the antenna along its course in the windshield may be
remedied by using a solution to bridge the gaps. I have read this
someplace obscure, so take it with a big grain of salt. There are kits
for fixing the rear defrosters of cars that have the metallic elements
running across the rear glass. You take the applicator brush and paint a
fine line to join the gap. Apparently, the liquid hass metallic material.
4. if all fails and you want another non-invasive solution, I have seen
those tape antennas at our local Advance Auto for $6.00. Essentially it
has a few filaments of metal (4 or 5) embedded in plastic tape and
connected to a coaxial cable with a standard antenna plug. You can tape
the antenna to the top of the windshield and run the cable down the right
pillar. I would probably want to tuck the antenna between the windshield
and the rubber gasket then run the cable down the pillar.
5. Or, bite the bullet and drill a hole for a power antenna (I have).
It's out of the way when off and makes a cool whirring noise when it
deploys. Cost - $50.00

I hope this helps!
