spider transmission grinding

Folks-

My '87 Spider has begun producing some unnerving sounds when attempting to 
select wither 1st or R. Any attempt to shift into either results in brutal 
grinding. If I shift into 2nd or 3rd initially, then it generally goes into 
1st or R without much complaint. Once in gear the clutch does not seem to be 
slipping, though there is not an overabundance of power so I would not really 
expect it to. Does this sound like a clutch gone bad, or is it a bigger 
problem with the transmission (syncros or some such)?
