2L spica head gasket

So I changed my head gasket this week, got it resurfaced, everything nice
and clean. Put it all together and poured a bit of coolant in it while I
wait for a heater valve. Came back later in the afternoon to a big puddle.
I can still see it leaking out past the new head gasket practically all the
way around the split line. So what did I do wrong? Studs were clean, mating
surfaces were clean, chain tensioner wedge was in it's place.:-) Used liner
hold down tools through the whole operation. The new head gasket went on
dry. The head got torqued down evenly and in increments. Any ideas? Wasn't
really expecting it??
