Cranking voltage

I'm just catching up on several digests so if I'm
beating a dead horse with this, I'm sorry.

I liked the post by Bill Bain, about cranking voltage
on a spider. Where did you learn about that, Bill?

It seems to me you stood by and watched three
mechanics scratch their heads at Road Atlanta one time
trying to get a little Yellow race spider to run. It
would spark twice and then nothing. The battery read
12.5 volts static. Our biggest problem was trying to
trace wiring that had all been painted yellow and the
fact that most of the street only electrics hadn't
been removed (ie;power window relays and intermittent
windshield wiper relays) Finally, we had run the
battery down cranking on it and put a charger on it.
An hour later if fired right up. Jeff and I looked at
each other in disgust when we realized the problem...

Alfa and Bosch, say that L-Jet requires 9.6 volts to
excite the ignition system. In talking to ARDONA
techs, it varies in the real world from one car that
started at 9.2 to another that wouldn't below 11.0.
Motronic spec is 10.3, but I suppose again that each
car will be a rule unto itself. Believe me, after
spending hours in the hot sun trouble shooting what
was basically a low battery, battery voltage while
cranking is my first check.
