Re: speaker cutouts in Spider

I believe that the original speakers were the 5 1/4 size, but it looks
like there could be enough room for 6 1/2 inch speakers. Either they put
smaller speakers in the stock holes or cut it out and sort of tossed the
speakers into the car. Either way, you won't get good lower frequency
response with the front of the speaker communicating with the rear of it.
Get speakers that seal off the hole properly. Other than bringing several
different sized speakers to the car, I would think that your best bet
would be to make a tracing of the speaker hole and the surrounding screw
holes as a template to take to your friendly car audio shop. Also check
the depth of the hole, and if you have the airconditioning thingy mounted
underneath your passenger side dash, remember that there is not a lot of
clearance to mount thick grills. (I have 5 1/4 JBL gto speakers but had to
use some other grills that I borrowed from the old clarions.) Another
thing I did which made a difference was to use some foam baffles that
mount behind the speaker which cuts down on the noise that would be
transmitted from the wheel well through the speaker. I also put tweeters
in the side vents, Aura bass shakers mounted under the seats and a
4-channel amplifier to drive them all. Everything is relatively hidden
and does make a difference in sound (until I drive with the top down
over 10mph).

i hope my little experience here helps.
