RE: It's stuck,folks..(Alfetta's transaxle frozen)

some more thoughts on terry's gearbox..

i was perusing the gtv6/milano workshop manual the other day (i love having
all this stuff in html format, thanks tom w!) and stumbled across the
section for gearbox removal. keeping in mind that i've always removed the
entire transaxle when playing around in that area, it made for some
interesting reading.

basically, the factory procedure seems to be to undo the drive shaft at the
front of the tranny, undo the shift linkage, then lower the front of the
transaxle (holding it down with some special alfa tool that can easily be
replaced by two 6" tubafors). at that point the case is split and the
gearbox is removed, leaving the housing and differential in the car.

i've never tried this, but it seems much simpler than replacing an entire
transaxle - you don't have to mess with the half shafts, brake lines, etc,
and you're probably only dealing with half the weight of the transaxle.
should be less than a day job if you have a fresh gearbox ready to slide
back in.

worth looking into,

bs
