Responding to Terry Akins transmission problem on "Lazarus", the Velocissima
Special Edition Alfetta, and to Terry's proposal to replace the Alfetta box
with a Milano transmission, Brian Shorey lists some problems and adds:
"if i were going to use milano stuff i'd consider trying to locate a milano
parts car and use the entire rear end, plus the front hubs, and convert to
the five bolt hubs and aluminum calipers. or locate an early gtv6 parts
car, you could convert the entire suspension if you'd like (torsion bars,
sway bars, etc).
"probably simpler to repair the one you have.."
Not only simpler but far more consistant. The ONLY reason I can see for
cherishing something like the Velocissima Special Edition would be a belief
that the people who created this thing were making a rare and desirable
entity which deserves to be restored and maintained as a true reflection of
what it was originally, a true period-piece. Part of that special image is
the Ronal A-1 wheels, which are among the nicest alloys of that (or any
other) era. If converting such a car whole-hog to Milano-GTV-6 suspensions
and five-bolt hubs I would at least want to find a set of the five-bolt Ronal
A-1s, so it would at least look similar to its original state, apart from the
five studs and the 15" diameter and increased width. The five-bolt Ronal A-1s
are damned hard to find, and pricey when you do find them.
A used box from a late Alfetta shouldn't be hard to find, or expensive. If
Terry has the time and the space (and the inclination) pulling, tearing-down,
and rebuilding the box he has could be an interesting and informative
experience.
Cordially,
