Are you sure? I was always told that it was not for cooling, but to allow the
hot gas, which forms on heavy braking, to escape from between the pad and
rotor. This is the same principle as slotted rain tires allowing water to
escape from between the tire and road decreasing the tendency to aquaplaning.
I believe, if my memory serves me correctly that Roger Penkse was the first to
use these, the idea came from the folks at Porsche. He first used them on the
P 917/10? or P 917/30?. Next the old sly fox put it on the NASCAR AMC Matador?
he was running with Donahue. This was the same period of time that Donahue
coined the phrase "unobtainium" when referring to some of the Porsche parts,
rods?
