If I recall correctly, the turn signal mechanism uses a long spring
wrapped
around the steering shaft to cancel the signal after a turn.  If the
spring is
binding on the column, then one side stretches when the turn signal lever

is moved and the spring can pull it back to its original position.  You
might
want to check if there is sufficient lubrication between the spring and
the
steering shaft -- too much lubrication can prevent the signal from
cancel-
ling and too little can create the situation you describe (or can cause
the
signal to activate by itself when turning sharply!).
