Spider Ansa exhaust

I just replaced the rear muffler/tailpipe section on my '74 with an Ansa
unit I got from Heinz Mihm (who advertises on this digest from time to time).
I was surprised that the exhaust became quieter rather than louder.
I looked closely, and found that the two pipes out the back of the Ansa
had a tube inside them that reduced the diameter to 1 1/8 inches.
The stock single pipe I took off had a diameter of 1 3/4 inches. If you
do the math ( squaring, and doubling the Ansa) it turns out that the stock
diameter gives a cross section some 20% bigger than the Ansa.
I thought the Ansa was supposed to help--according to the above, it hurts!
Any comments would be welcome. (ie do I go back to stock?? or is there
something in the design of the Ansa that I don't understand.)
