Yes -- I have that wheel on the '81.

Don't feel bad -- R&T thought it was wooden.

I have restored the wheel.  Got all the old finish off (don't remember
exactly how), then a layer of stained polyurethane, rubbed down with fine
steel wool until the (fake) graining looked right, then clear gloss poly,
rubbed.  Looks great, and is tough.
