spider gas smell

Hi!
      i had that spider gas smell, i mean smell of gasoline emanating
      from the trunk of my '74 alfa spider for several years, though
      it was only strong when i drove with the top up, which was
      practically never.  i replaced the vent tube lines, & the fat
      filler tube which gets bad & cracked from being squeezed down
      to a smaller diameter over the tank stem than the filler tube
      stem.  but the smell didn't go away till i removed the tank &
      found the crack where 1 of the small vent tubes is attached to
      the tank.   the local radiator repair place welded it up for
      12$ !
