Pricey parts

In #484, Bill Harkell said:

"It's also a matter of understanding that the parts for Alfa are NOT
high priced. (We sell Subaru...ask me how I know...Alfa parts are
cheaper!)"

Wish he'd been around to tell me that a year ago! I had to replace the
head on my '89 Justy - that's the one with the itty bitty 3-cylinder
engine - and was given a price of $1500+ for a new one, so I found a
decent used one, which buddy Bob rebuilt. I then priced a valve-grind
gasket set at the dealer's counter, and was shocked to learn it was
DOUBLE the price of the last FULL ENGINE set I'd gotten for a
4-cylinder Alfa! Wound up getting the gaskets from CarQuest
(unsolicited plug) for a bit over $200.

Yeah, Alfas will cost you money, but not nearly as much as most cars.
The most we've had to spend at one time on the Milano was about $700
last month, for which we got both rear calipers and the brake master
cylinder (not ABS!) replaced. Good shop, too.
