Tony, 

I get the same thing you describe with my 85'GTV6.  I have always
believed it has something to do with the vapor recover system, as maybe
the tank being situated over the rear brakes/exhaust temporarily heats
gas/gasses and hence rumbling. Indigestion i guess....
