SPICA Pump Reference Screw

Pat is referring to the "pump reference screw" which is located at the
bottom rear of the SPICA pump assembly. It is set at the factory and
usually covered with a plastic cap that is secured with lock wire. (The
cap usually becomes brittle after about 20 years, cracks into pieces and
disappears.) The screw itself may or may not have a "paint seal".

The position of the set screw is absolutely critical for proper set-up of
the linkages (which is why Pat says to deduct so much). If there is
evidence of tampering with the set screw, it will be virtually impossible
for the average owner to properly calibrate the fuel delivery system
which, in turn, will affect performance and emissions. If the seals are
broken, the only way to be sure that the screw is properly set is to
remove the pump from the car and send it to an expert (like Wes Ingram)
for calibration.
