i agree w/you that gas taxes are regressive, and there would be hell to pay if
we (americans) woke up tomorrow and found that gas was $4/gallon.  i still think
that's what we should be paying for the stuff.  and, jeez, i wish my family's
income was 3 times the nat'l average - it's not even close!  i yust shop smart!

if the govt, as you say, gave a hoot about cleaning up anything other than
intern's dresses, perhaps they would be considering something like raising the
gas tax, say, 5 cents/month - that'd be $3.00 after 5 years.  enough time to get
people who can't really afford daily driver gas pigs off their butts to modify
their behavior w/o backing them into a corner financially.  'course, there's no
place for logic & common sense in usa politics.  i guess that's what happens
when only a third of those eligible to wote actually do so...  :<(
