ALFA 164S Fuel Smell

Hello Alfisti!

I have a certain fuel smell problem and would appreciate if somebode
could help me.

I have a 1991 Alfa 164s. For two years now, when the fuel tank if full
and the car driven sharply, fuel was smelling badly in the rear, comming
from the trunk. (twice at the Alfa specialist and he discovered
nothing) I discovered the smell was comming from the fuel pump, from
two of the eight screws securing the pump. Tighting the srews made the
problem less noticeable, but it was still leaking a little. Now, I was
about to replace the gasket with e new one, but I cannot seem to get the
pump out. The metal "clamps" that hold the pump inside seem to be
spread out so badly that the pump does bot want to come out.

I am not aware if the fuel pump should be in such a position; the shop
manual states it should come out easily. Anyone with a similar
alfa/fuel pump experience is highly appreciated with any input
whatsoever.

Sincerely

Bobi
