re: Milano V6 (tachometer)

Krumian (if that really is your name)

I have a similar problem with my Milano Verde. The tachometer reads
low, and the rev-limiter cuts in at an indicated 4200 RPM. For a while
this was an intermittant problem. Some days it worked properly, other
days it read slow. Sometimes I could see it jump from the slow reading
up to a near-correct reading. Now it always reads low.

Some people have posted advice on how to adjust the tach, but I think
mine is beyond adjusting. I'm not sure if it can be repaired. I was
thinking about calling Palo Alto Speedometer to see if they might be
able to fix it. The other option is to buy a new or used unit. I'm
hesitant to buy a used unit only to experience the same problems. I
have also thought about removing the unit and checking for dirty
connections or shorts, but haven't had time.

If you find out anything conclusive, please drop me a note. With the
time and money constraints school is putting on me these days, this is a
low priority for me, but eventually I'd like to fix it without having to
add an aftermarket tach.

Also, if anyone knows if new tachometers are available could you please
post that info?

Thanks,

A couple of weeks ago I submitted information about my engine, about how
I
couldn't get the thing over 5000 rpm and I got a lot of responses
telling me
to check the cam and ignition timing. After checking everything out, we

figured out that everything was fine so we checked the tachometer and
that's
where the problem was. We did this based on the speeds I was seeing at
given
rpms in each gear and comparing it to a good source. For example, in
5th, my
car sees 90 mph at 3000 rpm, which as I understand, should equate to
approximately 63 mph (2.5 engine). Depending on speed, it shows 700 to
1100
rpm less than what the engine is turning. So all this time I've been
able to
hit redline but not knowing it. The limiter is coming in around an
indicated
5400 rpm.

Is this a common problem and if so, is it the tach itself that needs to
be
calibrated or is it an electronic issue of not picking up the correct
signal
from the distributor? Thanks.
