Hard-Starting Verde

Folks, what was a hard-starting Verde (which I thought was possibly due to
the below-freezing temperatures of late in the CA Bay Area) is now a
non-starting Verde. The past week or so it was taking longer than usual to
"fire" during cranking.
Today it "turned the corner" and decided not to start at all. I started her
cold in the morning, (with the usual symptoms of late showing themselves)
drove the 34 miles to work, and parked for a few hours. I started her again
and drove for about three minutes to another location. Two minutes later
when I had to start-up again, no luck.
She would act like she about to start and then, sputter. After turning the
key and then realeasing, it would sputter for a second or two. A couple of
times, the engine even
backfired in the manifold I assume. I don't think it was flooded as I tried
starting it without stepping on the gas pedal. Then later, out of
desperation, I tried pressing the gas. I even let it sit for about four
hours and tried it. Any ideas on the problem/solution? Fuel injection too
little/too much? It runs great after it's started.
Any help would be appreciated.
