milano roof rack & "spiders"?

One option for a Milano rack would be to start looking for an Alfa rack.  =
I have an accessories catalog from '89 showing the rack, and the various =
(bike, ski, kayak, etc) adapters that go with it - maybe a euro dealer =
can still get these.  I saw one @ Centerline last year on a wreck.

My acessories catalog also shows a photo of "wheel spiders" for both a =
Spider and a Milano.  In the photo, these look like some kind of deadly =
weapon. Could someone please tell me what the hell these are and what =
they do?!
