<the fan belt and using a spanner on the generator was the simplest way
<of turning the engine over while being able to see timing marks.
<Slackening the fan belt when you finish the job is probably essential
<to avoid damaging the generator (or alternator) bearings.

I've found with most cars if you press on the belt with one hand 
while turning a socket drive on the alternator you can get enough 
belt friction to turn the engine slowly. Saves messing with the belt 
tension.
