164 Gear Oil

I changed the gear oil in my 92 164S and found it to be a mix of ATF and
standard gear oil.  I refilled with Dexron III and it's been shifting
better, particularly on the cold winter mornings.  I would also be
interested in the current wisdom on the subject. I know many manual
transmissions are now filled with ATF.
