Brad,
Another alternative to the SZ (metal) bush and the standard
(rubber) bush is the polyurethane bush. Check out the
Superflex web page at http://195.153.26.160/superflex/a.html
I am thinking of using this part instead of the rubber bush.
<Insert standard disclaimer here>  I asked if anyone had used
this part before, but nobody replied.

Also, just letting you know that your idea of using an
aluminium spacer for the caster arm/ball joint modification
is used by a local Alfa repairer in Sydney. They quoted me
about 1.5 hours labour to do this.
