Sean:

My Duetto did that about a year ago, and the problem turned out
to be a valve guide that had come adrift.  While the guides are
supposed to be pressed in never to come loose, if they're not
properly sized (the machine shop who did the work on that engine
was not an Alfa specialist), they can work loose.  Increased
oil burning (notice I didn't just say "oil burning") was another
symptom.  

Another machine shop was able to knurl the old guide, and press
it back in.  So far, it has worked OK.
