When the water pump failed on my Sprint it gave an odd =

noise. If left it will start to weep water and eventually sieze
up, which will break the fan belt and so deprive the =

alternator of any drive

If it does fail the engine will overheat (although on a cool
night at a low constant speed it will run without seriously
overheating for quite a distance).

To check the bearings, loosen off the fan belt and check
for play on the pulley wheel and for a reasonably smooth
operation.
