33 gearbox question

I recently experienced a problem with my 33 1.5 IE's gearbox.

My gear-lever lost contact with the gearbox and was stuck in 4th. I managed
to get to the local garage in 4th gear (very painful experience..) , where I
was told this was a well-known problem with the 33 gearbox.

It had something to do with a spring?

I'd like to know if this problem can occur frequently, and if so, is it
possible to repair it by yourself?
