Ignition timing

Does anyone know if advancing the timing will increase performance/mileage on
my Milano Verde?  Does the V6 have a knock sensor?  I just had the car smogged
and had to back the timing off a little bit for it to pass.  This cut power
quite substantially.  Will advancing cause any problems (higher exhaust temp.,
knocking)?
