gearbox query

On my 67 Giulia Super, which has a later 115 trans (year unknown), the
shifting feels smoother, lighter, and more positive when the gearbox
is cold than when it's hot. Does that make sense? Why would that be?
I'm using regular 80/90W gear oil, either Pennzoil or Castrol, and it
is full of oil. Maybe synthetic would help, but I've heard mainly
that synthetic helps shifting when cold, and is likely to leak a lot
     more.
