re: 6500 rpm???

In AD v7n74 Alan Lambert asked why all cars seem to redline around 6500rpm.
Alan wondered if it had anything to do with the physical sciences.

Alan, you are correct, it does not. The simple answer is that automotive
engineers can't count higher than that without taking off their shoes and
socks. Knowing the (stereo)typical social habits of engineers, this action
would be a deadly fax pas, resulting in injury and possible death, not to
mention the calling of the EPA. This fundamental rule is part of the standard
curriculum in Eng101.

BTW, the numbers greater than 6500 on the tach are put there by the sales and
marketing types, often without consulting the engineers. The S&M types know
that if you put bigger numbers on something, people will make assumptions and
buy on the basis of those assumptions. Smart cookies, no?

I have my flame suit on, this was written in good fun as automotive engineers
are related to aerospace engineers, of which I am one. I also have an
understanding of sales/mktg types as I married a very good one a decade ago.
