Rebuilding an alternator by yourself?

The Milano workshop manual has very detailed instructions on 
how to take apart a Bosch alternator and check its various 
components.  I wonder if anybody has rebuilt his/her alternator
by following the manual and where I can find necessary replacement 
parts.  Could somebody shed some light on this?
