Fairly straightforward job. Replacing bearings, brushes, regulator is all
quite simple. Parts are available at any automotive electrics specialist.
If more than this needs doing, it's probably easier and not much more
expensive to get an exchange rebuilt unit. 
If you do go ahead with the rebuild yourself, you don't need much
specialist tools. A soldering iron and a digital multimeter will be needed,
in particular if you want to check the power and field diodes. The Haynes
automotive electrical and electronic manual gives some useful additional
information.
