FAQ: oil pressure loss, senders, crank plugs

In AD7-039 Jeff Matson asks a FAQ aboout sudden oil pressure drop. To answer
his last question first, "is this something that can be driven gently to my
Alfa
mechanic (25 min away)", the answer is yes, 10psi is plenty for a cautious
trip to the mechanic. In a worst-case, flood-oiling (what used to be called
"splash" when it came from the factory,) does fairly well. (Henry Ford's Old
999 record car had an open crankcase, with the mechanic hanging on the side of
the car with an oil-can squirting at the rods as they went by-)

Back to THE QUESTION, by block-moves: Last time this question was answered was
January 29, by Paul Irvine, Antioch CA

"your best bet at this point is to remove the sender and screw in a line
connected to a mechanical gauge so you can determine what the pressure REALLY
is. The Alfa gauges are notorious for inaccuracy but that doesn't necessarily
mean it's at fault - could be sender, could be gauge, could be crank plug or
oil pump failure. Verifying the pressure will tell you which way to go."
