164 timing pulley removing

I had a hard time removing the big nut on timing pulley support hub.
on manual it shows a tool called torque reactor.   Has anyone
able to remove the pulley without the tool ?

BTW, how critical is intake valve gap.  One of them is slightly
over upper limit( 0.51 mm vs. upper limit of 0.50 mm ).
Can I just leave it as is and check it 30,000 miles later.
