milano speedometer won't work

Alfisti,
  My '89 Milano Gold speedometer stopped working.  I notice in the shop 
manual that there is a sending unit located near the clutch.  The manual 
states how to remove the unit, but gives no detail as to how to test it. 
 Does anyone have any tips on checking the speedometer system?
