Steve- (and anybody else)- all is not usually lost if you don't have a room
when you get into monterey.  In years past, when everything was "fully
booked", friends have always been able to get a room with a little persistance
by just driving down the Munras Ave "strip" of motels, and stopping and asking
at each one- there always seem to be some no-shows. There is a monterey
visitor's bureau clearing house of some sort, as well (don't know what the
real name is); you can try that too, but people I know have always been
successful with the "knocking on doors" strategy... good luck!
