I think they're hard -- compared to mild steel.

You will need feeler gagues to check clearance.  The sort with a bend in
them will probably work well for an Alfa.  (Check the clearances you are
looking for, and be sure the set you get covers that range.)

If you attack the shims, you will need a michrometer -- scary precision
tool -- but the HW stores near me have a little one (0 to 1") by OMEGA (or
something like it) which is good enough.
