The proper answer is to purchase the set(s) for a few hundred bucks.

You already know that.  If you were to purchase a set, I'd favor the
thinner one -- it is clearances going to zero which cause problems.

Next best bet is a quick trip to a dealer to get the one you need. Need a
ride, or a second car.  I did that, and they did not have the thinnest
one, which I needed.

So I bought the next thinnest one.  Yes, they are hardened.  <Very> hard.
I put the shim on a valve-stem, oiled, held perpendicualr to a wheel
suitable for cutting hard steel, and ground it down.  Need to get them
pretty flat and even.  A couple years ago.  Difficult; not quite
impossible.
