GM hates Italian cars?  That's fine with me.  I hate GM cars too.
The only GM I might possibly buy is a Corvette.  The only other GM
I might possibly test drive is a Camaro/Firebird.

I too am subjected to GM every time I rent.  Last time was a Grand Am.
"Wider is better"?  Only when you've got a decent suspension underneath
you.

From my experience, Ford's are marginally (insignificantly?) better.
I have yet to try a recent Chrysler...

Re: GM's commercials - Trucks are great.  I think everyone should at
least have access to one, if not own one.  Just don't commute in
it unless you have to.  Sports cars are great too.  I think everyone
should have one too.  Just don't try to carry plywood in it.
