164 climate control fan motor

My 164Q has a faulty fan motor in the climate control system, and
consequently will not blow air into the cabin. Very uncomfortable on a hot
Melbourne summer's day! One of the bushings/bearings has
collapsed/disintegrated and puts too much load onto the motor, so that it
will not turn the fan at any setting.

I am told that to replace/repair the motor means removal, which means the
entire system has to come out via the dashboard, which means two days work,
which means lotsa money.

Does anybody have an easier fix? Can the motor be extracted - even with some
butchering - via the engine bay? Has anybody else had this same problem?

All suggestions gratefully received!
