[alfa] The owner's manual and parts book: Giulia TZ (T.Z.)



If this was only opinion, I would move on rather than extending the G (Giulia
not Gran) TZ (no 1) thread a little longer.
In response to Brain Shorey's suggestion that the TZ's homologation papers
might hold the answer as to what the TZ was called originally, just such
papers are at the front of Tony Adriaensens' 1994 "Alleggerita," a thick hard
cover complilation of European race photos, chassis numbers and race motors
and parts photos for the GTA.
 The TZ's FIA homologation papers, dated January 13, 1964, shortly after the
model's debut at Monza and prior to what was to be a very major factory effort
at Sebring in March, are headed "Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ" (no periods). So, too,
are the supplemental FIA approvals for various tires sizes (May 1964), short
course 2.33/.88 gear set and wider and smaller wheels (December 1964) and then
the twin plug head (March 1965).
While Brian was on the right track - look to an official source that was
involved early - the TZ's parts book and owner's manual, both coming directly
from Alfa Romeo, should be more official still (and as early).
The parts book is labeled "Giulia T.Z.", with periods. The owner's manual's
cover says "Giulia TZ," while a reference inside says "Giulia T.Z."
And to general auto readers, in full page magazine advertising (in October
1964 and July 1965) after race successes at Monza and in England, the car was
identified as the Giulia TZ.
I say that "Gran Tourismo" is a non-starter, and that TZ, from tubolare
Zagato, looks to shakily have left its origins behind and taken on a life of
its own.
