[alfa] single row timing chains



Thanks to all who responded to my question about single row timing chains, Yes
the Braden book was the source of the "inspiration" for this, I say that
because most of the suppliers that I contacted responded with the e-mail
equialent of "what" I e-mailed orion and mentioned that it was suggested that
I contact them and Jack  (Beck I assume) replied and ask that I post "I do not
sell or recommend single row timing chains for 4 cyl Alfa's" that's good
enought for me. The intention was not to install this chain in my current
motor, as I have too much invested in it to gamble like that, But I do not
intend to take this car onto the track again and was considering building a
budget track only Spider, the budget being about what I have in this motor,
remove as much weight as possible and spend as little on the motor as
possible, cut the springs rather than buy racing springs, shave the head
rather than buy hi-compression pistons, etc, and the 20 hp gain mentioned in
the Braden Book seemed to good to pass on, No fan and a small 1100cc Fiat alt,
are about the limit in that area. Several interesting things about the single
row chains, several BMW specialists have single row replacements for the
double row stock, these are intended for track, found 1 site about a modified
corvette with a single row jwis chain, the thread quickly became a discussion
on why the motor failed big time after a few miles, some felt spun bearing,
some felt that the oil pump failed, wonder what Jack Beck"s opinion would be?
But I doubt that Pat Braden would publish this info if there weren't some
truth to it, Was this something that was done? did racers stop doing it as
displacment increased beyond 1300? I don't doubt there were HP gains as you
would be reducing rotating mass. So anybody who's memory goes back to the 50's
and early 60's know about this,?
