Re: [alfa] The other end of the clutch pedal

Amanda,
Sure sounds like your clutch pedal shaft has experienced the broken
weld syndrome.  These things are notorious for breaking at the same place;
just a bad design which strangely enough hasn't been fixed by Alfa. One
thing many people do when replacing it, is to put some extra welds to beef
it up; sometimes you buy them already welded but I'm unsure of the vendor.

It happened to my '86 Spider a few years back and it broke just as I
was pulling into the driveway (what a nice car it is)...with a 3 day weekend
ahead of me to fix it. I eventually removed the brake MC (master cylinder)
along with the clutch MC for better access after much fiddling around. It
is sort of a fussy job but quite do-able without any esoteric handtools. I
even tried my hand at re-welding the parts back together but was unable to
accurately align them - it didn't take much to be off enough to make it
unusable.

But you will have to bleed the brake and clutch circuits if you
disconnect them, of course. But you can take advantage of the situation and
replace all the rubber hoses (brakes have three, and the clutch one) if you
haven't done it already.

But here is an article in which the author did it without removing
the brake MC: http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/downs/3837/clutarm1.html .

One thing about replacing the clutch slave cylinder. If the clutch
MC is of the same age, it will go soon afterwards. With the new slave
cylinder building up more pressure due to the better seals, then the seals
in the old MC will go.

Subject: [alfa] The other end of the clutch pedal

Dear Alfa folks,
Greetings! Back on the List after computer problems. I had to put a new
slave cylinder on an "86 Spider Veloce and it was great for about a month.
Then i had to double clutch it. I tried to drive it yesterday and clutch
would not engage at all!
Looked at everything and the other end of the clutch pedal, up under the
hood, where the plunger goes into the master cylinder, wasn't throwing the
plunger at all. Upon closer inspection, the second part of the "arm" that
goes onto some type of gear box looking thing had busted a weld. The "arm"
has a circular indentation, and the gear box thing has a circular piece
sticking out. they appear to have been welded togather.
I guess after that long winded, half baked explaination my question is can I

have the things welded back togather, or do i need to buy new parts?
