While I rather liked bs's suggestion of putting a value of $10k on an
Alfetta then "accidentally" (my addition) running it into a wall might
have a few flaws.
That said...Hagerty says you can value a car pretty much what you feel
it is worth to you and if it is totaled they'll write you a check for
the full amount.
I take that with a wee bit of the grain of salt. Since you need to send
photos to them and unless the car is beyond pristine, I'm sure they
would either (a) pay to have yours fixed or (b) find you an equivalent
one - for considerably less than $10k.
Quite frankly it wouldn't take too much imagination (though many might
argue, little sense) to dump $40k into an Alfetta GT. $10k paint job,
Wilton carpeting, killer sound system, special wheels and tires, perhaps
a custom TS with either turbo or supercharger along with a custom EFI
system. Perhaps a custom aluminum radiator to go with the water (as
opposed to only air) intercooler. Hang on to those receipts.
I'd guess they'd be stuck for the full amount - providing you didn't get
whapped pulling out of the local A & P. Getting blind sided pulling out
of the parking lot at the Pebble Beach concours - the check should be in
the mail.
